“I also want to play John Candy,” Barrymore told longtime co-star Adam Sandler on her talk show.

Drew Barrymore may be reuniting with Cameron Diaz onscreen.

The daytime talk show host told her longtime friend and co-star Adam Sandler that she has been discussing a “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles” remake with Diaz. And while Barrymore has her sights set on playing the role of an overbearing salesman originated by late star John Candy, the Steve Martin marketing executive character is still up for grabs between Diaz and Sandler.

“Her and I did discuss remaking ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,’ and then I was like, ‘Well you know Adam and I talk about that,’” Barrymore recalled telling Diaz during the “Drew Barrymore Show” via Entertainment Weekly. “Well, I also want to play John Candy.”

“You could do a good Candy,” Sandler responded. “You know who could do Candy the best? [Chris] Farley. He would walk around the office and say lines from ‘Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.’”

The 1987 film directed by John Hughes centered on two businessmen trying to make it back home in time for Thanksgiving. Barrymore starred opposite Sandler in three films: “The Wedding Singer,” “50 First Dates,” and “Blended.” Similarly, Barrymore and Diaz co-starred in the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” film and its 2003 sequel “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.”

After retiring from acting in 2014, Diaz is set to make her big screen return with the fittingly-titled upcoming Netflix film “Back in Action” with fellow “Annie” alum Jamie Foxx.

An audio snippet captured Diaz telling Foxx she is “so anxious” about coming back to acting. “I’m like pacing the room,” Diaz says. “I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, you know?”

Netflix posted on Twitter: “Cameron Diaz is officially un-retiring!! She will star with Jamie Foxx in a new Netflix movie — and we have an unexpected person to thank for getting her back in action…”

Diaz previously spoke out about her career in Hollywood earlier this year, telling “RuPaul’s Drag Race” judge Michelle Visage on the podcast “Rule Breakers” that she had to reflect on the “trap of it all.”

“Fame is very infantilizing,” the “Mask” star said. “It’s very much about keeping somebody coddled in a state of like, we see a little child and think, ‘It’s so cute, I want it to always be cute, and if I keep it cute by always treating it cute, maybe it’ll stay cute forever.’ And that’s how people treat you.”

Fans of The Holiday are getting a lump of coal this Christmas season.

Producer-writer-director Nancy Meyers, who helmed the 2006 rom-com starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black, has shot down rumors that the OG stars will reunite to film a sequel.

“So many DM’s about this. Sorry but it’s not true,” Meyers wrote on Instagram. EW has further confirmed with another source connected to the situation that the sequel rumors are not true, and that Winslet has not signed on.

British outlet The Sun initially reported that Diaz — who recently announced her return to acting following a brief retirement from the screen — would reprise her role for another Holiday movie alongside Winslet, Law, and Black, set 17 years after the events of the first movie.

EW has reached out to representatives for the cast and distributor Sony, though none immediately responded to our request for comment.

Following two women — one from America, the other living in London — who agree to swap homes for the holidays in order to heal from their respective romantic woes, The Holiday grossed over $200 million at the global box office upon its release, and has since become an annual viewing staple among its followers.

Well we finally have a new layout. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve also updated the sidebar including all the projects that Cameron has done recently including her return to acting in Netflix’s Back in Action. The amazing header was made over 2 years ago by the amazing Insomniac Wonderland. My plan was to have this header added with the launch of the new gallery (yes, I’m currently re-doing the gallery and collecting photos of Cameron here and there so everything is more organized and neat). It’s a huge job since Cameron has had a huge career.

CAMERON DIAZ OPENED up about her return to acting after an eight-year hiatus during an interview on The Tonight Show, where the actress talked about co-starring in the upcoming action-comedy appropriately titled Back in Action. “It’s a little bit of muscle memory, you know what I mean? I did that for so long, it’s kind of like the process — I just fell back into it,” Diaz told Jimmy Fallon. “But it feels a little bit different.”

In late June, it was announced that Diaz would make her long-awaited return to movies in Netflix’s Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx, who she co-starred with for her last big screen appearance, 2014’s Annie. Prior to Annie, Diaz and Foxx also appeared together on-screen in the 1999 football drama Any Given Sunday, and Foxx lured Diaz out of quasi-retirement with help from perpetually un-retired quarterback Tom Brady.

“I’ve also made two movies with Jamie Foxx, which is amazing. The last movie I made was Annie with Jamie, and so the first movie back is this film with Jamie,” Diaz added. “He’s so great, he’s so easy, he’s so professional, he’s so talented. And just being able to work with him, it’ll be so much fun. I’m nervous about that because I have to listen to Jamie, because he will go. He’s like a racehorse. I just want to be able to support him along the way.”

In 2018, four years after Annie, Diaz officially stated she’d decided to retire from acting. In the years since, Diaz has remained busy, publishing her second book, The Longevity Book, launching her own wine brand, and welcoming her first child with husband Benji Madden of Good Charlotte.

“Cameron is such an incredible force and she has done so much in this business,” Jamie Foxx gushed over his former Any Given Sunday costar.

Jamie Foxx is quite a convincing person!

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Oscar-winning actor shared how he persuaded his former Any Given Sunday costar, Cameron Diaz, to come out of retirement.

“Cameron is such an incredible force and she has done so much in this business,” Foxx first gushed over the actress. “We love her.”

Explaining what it took to convince Diaz, 49, to join him in the upcoming Netflix movie, Back in Action, Foxx, 54, said it was simply from a proposal of having a good time.

“So it was literally, ‘Do you wanna have some fun? Just have some fun!’ And I think that’s what brought her to it,” he told the outlet.

“We miss special moments sometimes in our business, and I think this is a special moment,” he continued. “So we’re so happy that it’s happening and looking forward to it.”

Foxx — who enlisted Tom Brady to help share a few tips to un-retire with Diaz — also added, “We had to be very innovative in how we, you know, brought her back.”

Last month, a film source revealed to PEOPLE that her Annie co-star Foxx “pursued” her for the new Netflix action-comedy film.

“When this project came along and she was pursued by Jamie Foxx, who she has known and worked with for years, she decided to go for it,” said the source.

Diaz also recently opened up about her return to acting after an eight-year hiatus in an interview with CBS Saturday Morning. The star told co-host Dana Jacobson that she missed her craft during her time away.

A family source tells PEOPLE that Cameron Diaz is “nervous” but “mostly excited” about making her return to acting in Back in Action opposite Jamie Foxx

Benji Madden is wife Cameron Diaz’s biggest cheerleader.

Days after it was announced that Diaz, 49, will be making her return to acting in a new Netflix film titled Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx, a family source tells PEOPLE that Madden, 43, “is very excited for her.”

“He encouraged her to unretire,” the insider continues.

According to the source, the action-comedy is “the perfect movie project for” Diaz to make her return with, as “she worked with Jamie in the past and had a blast.”

“She feels a bit rusty and nervous about it, but mostly excited,” the insider adds. “She is ready to tackle this movie project.”

In audio from a phone conversation shared Wednesday by Foxx, 54, Diaz can be heard telling him, “I feel excited but I don’t know how to do this, you know?” before he responds, “I got somebody on the other line that can help you with this.”

Tom Brady soon joins the call, telling Diaz that Foxx told him she could use “a few tips on how to un-retire.” (Brady, 44, famously returned to the NFL in March, after first announcing his departure only the previous month.)

“I’m relatively successful at un-retiring,” Brady quipped.

Diaz also shared the audio clip to her Instagram Story, writing, “@iamjamiefoxx only you could get me back in action! I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!”

Diaz — who married Madden in 2015 and has a 2-year-old daughter, Raddix, with the Good Charlotte rocker — previously stepped away from acting following her performance as Miss Hannigan in 2014’s Annie, in which she co-starred alongside Fox.

The actress heaped praise upon her musician husband during a March appearance on the Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers podcast, saying, “He’s really taught me to value myself a lot more.”

Diaz went on to say she wasn’t expecting to feel that way initially, because she “was receiving so much validation elsewhere and in all these other ways” before her relationship with Madden.

“With our marriage, I learned how to really go all in. You know what I mean? … Nothing else comes before this,” she added. “It’s not hard to do, because it’s the most valuable thing I have.”

For Madden and Diaz, “We know that, no matter what, we can just go and be just a family anywhere, and we’re fine,” she explained. “We don’t need any of the things that we have, other than each other.”
