Cameron Diaz and Stephen Merchant are starring in an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios romantic comedy movie that Merchant will direct off a screenplay he co-wrote with John Butler.

The as-yet-untitled film follows a workaholic Brit (Merchant) employed at an upscale New York hotel who needs a wife for appearances. He strikes a deal with a struggling stand-up comic (Diaz) who is desperate for health insurance. Their fake marriage starts as a transaction but ends in an unexpected romance.

We hear that Best Medicine‘s Josh Segarra and comedian and Joy Ride actor Sherry Cola are boarding the untitled romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Stephen Merchant at Amazon MGM Studios.

Merchant, as we first told you, is directing, and he also co-penned the screenplay with John Butler. The pic is produced by Lee Eisenberg; Merchant; and Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver and Josh Fagen. Natalie Sandy will executive produce.

Segarra is currently starring in Best Medicine, Fox’s hit comedy based on the UK’s Doc Martin. Additional television credits include Apple TV’s The Big Door Prize, Starz’s Heels, the HBO Max comedy series The Other Two, She-Hulk, CW’s Arrow, Fox’s The Moodys, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, CW’s Katy Keene, USA’s Sirens and NBC’s Chicago P.D. Feature credits include Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck, MGM’s Overboard, the Emmy-nominated Netflix film Christmas on the Square, and A24’s Friendship. The actor is repped by ATA Management, CAA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Cola just joined the cast of Disney’s Camp Rock 3, and will also be seen in You’re Dating a Narcissist! opposite Marisa Tomei, in theaters this month. On TV, Cola recently reprised her role in the second season of Netflix’s Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated series Nobody Wants This, and appears in the third season of Apple TV+’s Emmy-nominated hit Shrinking. Additional credits include the action-comedy Bride Hard, Sony’s Shortcomings, Freeform’s Good Trouble, Peacock’s Poker Face, Netflix’s A Family Affair, TNT’s Claws and Pixar’s Oscar-winning Turning Red. Cola is represented by CAA, Stark Management and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
