Cameron Diaz last appeared on the big screen in 2014’s Annie, and has stayed out of the spotlight ever since
Cameron Diaz is loving life away from the spotlight.
The actress, who first burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1994’s The Mask, hasn’t appeared on screen since the 2014 remake of the musical Annie — marking an impressive 20-year career with plenty of iconic hits. Now 46, Diaz explained her recent retreat from the public eye in a new interview for InStyle‘s special 25th anniversary issue.
“I started [experiencing fame] when I was 22, so 25 years ago — that’s a long time,” Diaz said. “The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to. I don’t miss performing.”
Still, Diaz isn’t totally ruling out a return to the big screen — she’s just focusing on other callings.
“Right now I’m looking at the landscape of wellness and all that. But whatever I do, it has to be something I’m passionate about — something that just feels effortless,” she said.
The actress has also been spending plenty of quality time with husband Benji Madden, 40. The two, who married back in Jan. 2015, live a quiet life outside of the public eye and are rarely seen out and about together.
That privacy seems to be by design.
“It’s fun to just not have anybody know what I’m up to,” she said. “Because my time is all mine. I’m not selling any films, and because I’m not selling anything, I don’t have to give anybody anything. I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life.”
Now in her 40s, Diaz said she’s settling into her “best decade” as she focuses on things that mean most to her, like her marriage to the Good Charlotte musician.
“I just want to build better, stronger friendships with the people who are in it with me. Of course, that includes my husband,” she said. “Getting married to him was the best thing that ever happened to me. My husband’s the best. He’s the greatest human being, and he’s my great partner.”
She continued: “I don’t know if I was ready [when I got married], but I knew Benji was special. He’s just a good man. There’s no bullshit. It’s really refreshing. I’m really grateful for him. I like doing my own thing.”
But fans might have something to celebrate soon, as Diaz teased potential new projects.
“I like creating, so I’m just looking for the project that makes the most sense for me now,” she said. “I have some things brewing, but it’s a little too early to talk about them.”

Cameron Diaz is keeping secrets. The actress who has been out of the limelight for years talked to InStyle magzine for its September issue and said she feels deserving of a little privacy given that she “started [experiencing fame] when I was 22, so 25 years ago.””The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public,” Diaz said. “I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world. If I decide to.”There’s been a continuing fascination with Diaz’s life since she’s mostly disappeared from the Hollywood scene years ago.
She last appeared in the 2014 remake of “Annie” and last year she declared herself “retired” from acting.
Now she says she doesn’t miss performing.”Right now I’m looking at the landscape of wellness and all that,” Diaz told InStyle. “But whatever I do, it has to be something I’m passionate about — something that just feels effortless.”Diaz, who has been married to musician Benji Madden since 2015, said, “It’s fun to just not have anybody know what I’m up to. Because my time is all mine.””I’m not selling any films, and because I’m not selling anything, I don’t have to give anybody anything,” she said. “I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life.”

The angels are back together!
Lucy Liu was joined by her Charlie’s Angels costars Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz at her Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday, where she received one of the iconic stars. The trio was also joined by Demi Moore, who starred in the 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle with them.
Liu, 50, took a moment to thank Barrymore, 44, and Diaz, 46, for coming out to support her, pointing out that it serves as a de facto reunion for the 2000 movie.
“My dear Angels, it’s a 20-year reunion,” Liu said as she looked over at her friends. “20 years ago we were an elite crime-fighting team, and now look at us.”
While Barrymore and Diaz didn’t speak, Moore, 56, took the stage to honor Liu and praise her before the star was revealed.
“Lucy continues to surprise me with her courage and fearless determination, seeing obstacles as mere stepping stones on the path to where you wanna go,” Moore said to her friend. “I am so happy to be here, it really is an absolute pleasure to stand up here. There is no one more deserving of this honor than you.”
The action star then took the stage, where she thanked all the people that helped her along her career.
“I am completely overwhelmed by the love and support of my friends, family, my fans,” Liu said after she was introduced. “Even though this star has my name on it, it is the result of the hard work of many brilliant writers, directors, actors, and crew who elevated me and helped me shine.”
While it’s been almost 16 years since the last Charlie’s Angels came out, there is a reboot opening in theaters later this year starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.
Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz‘s days as crime-fighting private investigators may be over, but their friendship is as strong as ever.
Barrymore, 44, opened up about her Charlie’s Angels costar, 46, at the premiere for Santa Clarita Diet season 3 to PEOPLE, calling Diaz “my bestie, my sister.”
On the Netflix show, Barrymore plays Shelia, a happily married mother who suddenly transforms into a flesh-eating zombie.
So, when asked if there was any person she’s worked with who she’d want to join her in immortality, Barrymore chose Diaz.
“Luckily, she’s in my life every day,” Barrymore said.
Since forming their bond over 18 years ago, Barrymore and Diaz have provided #friendshipgoals inspiration on several occasions.
Last year, the longtime friends shared moments from their “playdate,” which included a bare-faced, make-up free selfie — without any filter.
“Her and I are like sisters and we see each other all the time and it was just sort of where we are today,” Barrymore told PEOPLE of the selfie.
“In some ways just another day in our world, but I felt like sharing it. I love her.”
And the star maintains she wasn’t at all nervous to post the makeup-free shot. “We’d just come from a workout. We feel good. We’re not wearing any makeup and we’re just girls being ourselves. And sometimes all makeup and beauty fun aside, it’s just about the raw, honest, post workout look, you know? Just be you,” she said.
In her 2016 interview with Good Housekeeping, Barrymore said if she were ever to go to jail, Diaz would be the first person she would call.
“Not that any one of us are going to jail anytime soon,” Barrymore quickly added. “But 100 percent. She would, like, get in there and get you out.”
“If you’re looking for the best dinner-cooking partner and watching-TV-on-the-couch friend, call her,” Barrymore says. “If someone is in a medical situation, call her! She’s the most loyal, fierce, fun, cozy friend. We have incredible honesty with each other and we work hard on our lives and our friendship.”
All jokes aside, Diaz has truly proven to be that ride-or-die friend.
After Barrymore split with husband Will Kopelman in 2016, Diaz rushed to her side.
“Everybody pulls the wagons around, you know, our friends, whoever needs us at whatever point in time, even if it’s like something that the public doesn’t know about,” Diaz explained to Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM Radio show following the news of Barrymore and Kopelman’s divorce.
“Internally we’re all going like, ‘Okay, who needs us now?’”
Barrymore and Kopelman have two children together — daughters Olive, 6, and Frankie, 4.
Cameron Diaz is one of Hollywood’s biggest and most memorable talents — but she’s been taking a step back from her acting career.
A source tells PEOPLE Diaz, 46, isn’t interested in acting full-time at this stage in her life.
“There were times when she was so busy making movies that she barely had time to catch her breath,” says the source.
Now, however, “Those days are over but she could still take some roles — just not back to back,” adds the insider.
In recent years, Diaz has shifted focus from acting to wellness ambassador. In 2013, she released the bestseller The Body Book, followed by 2016’s The Longevity Book, in which she shared her secrets to aging beautifully.
In 2015, Diaz also married Good Charlotte band member Benji Madden and sources tells PEOPLE she couldn’t be happier. “Cameron feels so much better about everything since she married Benji,” another source said. “She had many years of dating high profile hunks. She found a different kind of man in Benji.” The source added, “He is her equal and respects her.”
Diaz previously dated Matt Dillon, Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake and Alex Rodriguez before meeting Madden in 2014 through her close friends and now sister-in-law Nicole Richie, who is married to Madden’s twin brother Joel Madden.
Diaz and Madden married 7 months after meeting and three months after getting engaged. Their relationship also coincides with Diaz’s last film role, which came in 2014’s Annie.
A source previously told PEOPLE that Diaz prefers her private life out of the spotlight to her life of the past.
“[Cameron and Benji] are great” and “both very happy living the quiet life,” the source told PEOPLE. “The quiet life she lives now with Benji, she wanted for a long time.”
