Entranced by Cameron Diaz’s glowing summer make-up in the new Vogue July 2010 issue, VOGUE.COM spoke to the make-up artist behind the look, Revlon global creative director Gucci Westman, to find out what it was like working with the Hollywood actress and get Westman’s expert advice on achieving “ageless” beauty.

How was it working with Cameron, have you worked together before?
I’ve been working with her for 15 years. From Being John Malkovich to the Oscars, Golden Globes and covers of Vogue, W, TV shows etcetera…lots. She’s a dear friend; we know each other very well.

Talk us through the creative process – did you go to the shoot with a clear vision in mind?
I didn’t know what we were doing until we got to the location, saw the clothes, chatted with Kate [Phelan], and then it all came together. You have to see the clothes really to know what to do.

How can we recreate Cameron’s make-up look at home?
It was a quite natural, but sun-kissed look. We wanted it to just look effortless and cool, and just an enhanced version of Cameron by the beach. The skin is glowing, and slightly warmed up a bit. I’d use Revlon Photo Ready Foundation; a cream blush in a peach tone; my new summer Revlon quad on the eyes with the brown blended up toward the socket and some black kohl liner dug close to the lashes. Then a little lip stain finished with Revlon gloss in coral or sheer red.

Cameron’s problems with acne have been well-documented. What’s your advice for camouflaging acne scarring?
Only cover specific spots with concealer; use a small-headed brush and a few different concealer shades to really focus on matching your skin so it doesn’t look like a grey or white bump. Too much foundation or powder is not a good idea for acne, it draws attention to it more than anything; you want to keep your skin looking luminous and fresh. Avoid powdery textures, use cream cheek colour if you can. I think you can wear make-up, definitely lip colour, eyes, but less foundation, and very little powder or none if you can.

The Vogue July issue is about ageless style and beauty – What’s your top tip on looking “ageless”?
Focus on making your skin look as luminous and radiant as possible, I suggest incorporating exfoliants into your beauty regime, in the shower or whenever is the easiest time-wise. Lips, bold colours can look very youthful and fresh. I find pearly finishes – although popular with more mature women – very ageing, but matte or sheer textures are very nice.
